Vampyyri ja balleriina (1960)
I was a bit surprised that The Vampire and the Ballerina didn't use more special effects and instead used only masks. Here, some scenes literally called for blending of images, which would have looked great, but in the end it was done by simply plain editing, which I think is a bit of a shame. Even so, The Vampire and the Ballerina has its charm and will find fans even in today's age of modern jump-scare horror.
Gornye ogni (2017)
The Body Tree boasts an interesting location and it has a few rituals, but it's all just set pieces that aren't used properly. The film is more than anything else a boring sequence of scenes where individual characters die in succession and it's not clear - or shouldn't be clear - who the killer is. And if you don't care when you’re watching it, you won't care at the end.
Kuoleman laakso (1982)
The American film Death Valley has a fairly classic slasher storyline that is not very surprising overall, which is quite a shame, because at the beginning it almost felt like it could have been imaginative. In the end, it's only Billy that holds the film together and makes you at least worry about him, if nothing else. The film boldly descends almost into mediocrity, but the finale saves it in the end.
The Void (2016)
For me, The Void is an old-school horror film, a horror film that doesn't play at being anything, even if the script tries to do a little more than simply massacre the characters. There's a little more depth, but it doesn't have to upset you in any way, and it’s that little something extra that you might not expect. In fact, you might not enjoy it. Even so, I found The Void to be an accomplished film that appears bland at first glance.
Dead Girls (2014)
The American film Dead Girls was a disappointment for me. I was hoping that at least one of the stories might stand out a little, but it turned out that none of the three stories had anything in them that could pull me in. If the filmmakers had simply made one into a short film and thrown it straight onto YouTube, it would probably be better than making three variations on a theme that are all the same.
Cô Hầu Gái (2016)
The Housemaid mainly plays on atmosphere, which I quite liked. The romance storyline gets a bit too much space here, and it doesn't even try to be any more exciting - everything is within its limits. However, then when it comes to the horror scenes it gets a bit more interesting, mainly because it’s pushed by the atmosphere. The Housemaid is certainly not a failure.
Snake Outta Compton (2018)
The American comedy Snake Outta Compton is not a horror film, because there really isn't much horror here and it's all about humor, good or bad. There are some bad special effects, which I found disappointing when it came to the snake, but eventually we get masks and it's not bad at all. No, Snake Outta Compton isn't the kind of movie that will blow you away, but I was also expecting it to be unwatchable, which certainly wasn't the case.
Death Screams (1982)
The American slasher Death Screams is quite rightly a forgotten horror film in its own right, because there's nothing about it that you haven't already seen before and that you haven't seen in better form. The saddest thing is that there is not a single good killing scene. They had a good idea with the bow, but it's also done in a kind of lazy and uninspired way. That's why this horror film will probably pass you by unnoticed.
The Eyes of My Mother (2016)
The American film The Eyes of My Mother is actually not quite a classic film about how the human soul can become twisted and disgusting, even if it looks innocent at first glance. The film also shows how we are shaped by what influences us, but also by what comes from within and what we simply cannot control. As a study of the fall of man, it's actually not bad at all.
Star Leaf (2015)
In my opinion, the film Star Leaf wanted to be a horror comedy, but it turned out to be neither. It is neither a comedy nor is it a good horror film. Actually, it is not a horror film at all, because the fact that there might be an alien has nothing to do with horror. If you add to that the annoying characters then you get a film that you probably won't finish watching.
