Along the Atlantic coast, a soon-to-be-inaugurated futuristic tower looms over a suburb of Dakar. Ada, 17, is in love with Souleiman, a young construction worker. But she has been promised to another man. One night, Souleiman and his co-workers leave the country by sea, in hope of a better future. Atlantique is an interesting variation on the “refugee drama” that looks at the stormy sea only from the African coast and through the eyes of those left behind by the refugees. It is both a fragile, poetic melodrama and a mystery with almost horror-style scenes. The film has value due to its creative approach and authentic insight into an unexamined culture, life and place in which none of us would want to live, but whose inhabitants feel, want and need everything as much as we do. This is a small, quiet festival film that unassumingly and modestly gets under your skin, with a longing to be remembered.
