Elena López Riera directed in 2015 her first short, Pueblo, which screened at the Cannes Quinzaine des Réalisateurs. Later, at Locarno Festival, she premiered Las vísceras (2016) and Los que desean (2018), which won the Pardino d'Oro for Best Swiss Short Film and was nominated for the European Film Awards. The project for El agua, her first feature, was selected for Ikusmira Berriak at the San Sebastián Film Festival in 2018, where it won the REC Grabaketa Estudioa Award, before going on to win the CNC Award at the Cannes Cinéfondation in 2019. The film premiered at the Cannes Quinzaine des Réalisateurs. She sat on the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera jury at San Sebastián Film Festival in 2021.
