Gladiaattori (2000)

englanti A clear disappointment after the first viewing. As a big Scott fan, I was expecting a big return of the Master. Actually, visually it was "Scott" and the music was monumental as well, but the shallowness of the script was unpleasantly surprising and the stupid dialogues made my toes curl. Also, as someone who is somewhat interested in history, it made me laugh a lot. But I’m used to it already. I've accepted the fact that it's an ordinary popcorn movie, visually it's awesome, Joaquin Phoenix is great and so I won't go below four stars.

Paradisets erövring (1992)

englanti Every shot from this film could serve as a picture in a gallery. Ridley Scott cannot deny his flair for composition. It’s a feast for the eyes and the ears that loses a lot on a TV screen. Scott said he couldn't imagine anyone other than Depardieu as Columbus and I couldn’t agree more. But the Americans had a different opinion, they made fun of Depardieu's English in the reviews and the film flopped there...Otherwise, it's not boring at all, but anyone who grunts in delight at Michael Bay's frantic direction will probably be bored by the slower pace of the narrative.

Duellanterna (1977)

englanti This is Scott's first film, it was shown on CT2 years ago, and even then it got me with its visual beauty and the wonderful villain role of Harvey Keitel. One of Scott’s best films.

Salaisuuksien saari (1958)

englanti When you realise Karel Zeman made his films on a shoestring, with minimal financial resources in the Gottwald-era, you just smile. He was a true genius.

Adelheid (1969)

englanti František Vláčil’s last big film. The consolidating normalisation regime did not like him and for many years he could only make documentaries. What a shame!

I bojor (1989)

englanti A rather enjoyable prison drama in the vein of Escape from Alcatraz and Shawshank. Even the expected clichés like predictable developments and evil guards are bearable for some mysterious reason. Unfortunately, the last 15 minutes make the film a rather hard to believe fable, which is a shame. Otherwise, I would recommend my colleague Rady to visit a zoo to study the mimicry of primates, his comment about Stallone is a bit off, I would say. Sly played his part, and he played it believably and likeably.
