Kirjeitä Iwo Jimalta (2006)

englanti I've read the book that Clint and the writers were inspired by, and I have to say that I imagined everything the way it was eventually presented to me in the film. Letters from Iwo Jima is undoubtedly one of the best "modern" war films I have seen.__P.S. Be sure to get the soundtrack - but be warned, it's terribly addictive and you won't be able to get it out of your head!

The Postman - tulevaisuuden sanansaattaja (1997)

englanti This gets full stars, and from my point of view they are clearly deserved. It's a film that never fails to entertain me and that I can finish even if I watch it at eleven o'clock at night. I must have a thing for fairy tales or something. P.S. If Costner hadn't shaved, it would have been even better - the bearded image suited him perfectly and it was a great fit for the post-apocalyptic story...

Monk (2002) (sarja)

englanti Nine out of ten. Not so much a crime series as a detective and quite often comedy series with an irresistible main character, Adrian Monk, a great duo of cops played by Ted Levine and Jason G. Stanford, and Monk's clueless and vigorous caretaker. The series is funny, suspenseful and touching (especially in the moments when Adrian remembers his wife Trudi in any way)... I think we have a worthy successor to Lieutenant Columbo.

Mafiaveljet (1990)

englanti If Leone hadn't made Once Upon a Time in America and Coppola had never made The Godfather, this would definitely be the best gangster movie of all time. It is “only” the third best. I don’t like the ending much. I should be, well, different.

Kuin raivo härkä (1980)

englanti What? The best boxing film and there's about ten minutes of boxing? But it’s brilliant. I like Rocky, I like Paul Newman in Somebody Up There Likes Me, but of all these battered men, Jake La Motta is my favorite, and I don’t know why.

Taksikuski (1976)

englanti Taxi Driver is the third best film made by Scorsese and De Niro after Raging Bull and Wise Guys. But of all the above, it has by far the best music - Herrmann's ending to his career is divine. How a few notes can capture not only the environment in which the film takes place, but also the mental turmoil of the main character... It's breathtaking. You see the opening credits (which Richard Donner pays homage to in Gibson's Ransom) and you know - this is going to be SOMETHING. And it is.

Jurassic Park III (2001)

englanti Yes, yes, action, fun, dinosaurs, great special effects... But the original magic is gone. Spielberg is simply missing from Jurassic Park. I didn't even get the feeling that the lizards were alive this time. Of the three stars, one goes to Sam Neill, one to ILM and Stan Winston, and one to the action sequences (the dinosaur fight, the Pteranodon cage).

Kadonnut maailma - Jurassic Park (1997)

englanti Sure, the magic of the first Jurassic Park is missing here, but it's important to remember that this is a completely different film. Thriller-ish, darker, blacker, even slightly self-parodic towards the end. But all the time it's a typically playful Spielberg movie, which I finish watching every time, wherever and whenever I see it.

Jurassic Park (1993)

englanti Jurassic Park - two hours of SOMETHING that probably changed my life. A perfect film in every respect. No matter what anyone says, the special effects are still unrivalled today. I don't know how it's possible, but when I look at a giant Brachiosaurus, I feel like it's alive. The T-Rex or the raptors in the kitchen are equally creepy. Jurassic Park got me into movies - I've loved the silver screen ever since. It also taught me to appreciate film music and gave me a reason to adore John Williams. That Spielberg's direction is unparalleled probably does not need to be mentioned, as well as the performances of all the actors. Basically, this is a movie miracle. You know it by heart, but you always like to watch it again.___P.S. Crichton's book is better, but in this case I don't think the book-adaptation comparison is appropriate. It should be perceived as Crichton and Spielberg looking at the same thing, but through their own eyes.

Monty Pythonin lentävä sirkus (1969) (sarja)

englanti I don't even think this is worth commenting on. All right, fine. Imagine the craziest humor, preferably English, you have ever encountered. And then imagine that the humor is standing on its head, bouncing backwards and pushing off the ground with its ears. That's roughly Monty Python's Flying Circus. It's genius, a masterpiece. And it's also a terrible bit of none-sense and disgustingness full of bizarre perversions and excremental shenanigans worthy of a fourth-rate intellectual with papers on his head.__My favorite Python: John Cleese.__My favorite sketch: Dennis Moore.
