The Beach (2000)

englanti It's a reflection on people, about who we are and what we are willing to do for our lifestyle. About morality, fleeting feelings of happiness and lying to ourselves that we were actually doing it for the greater good. Garland's subject walks untrodden island paths in the shoes of a dim-witted, young-faced American, Leonardo DiCaprio, who destroys relationships and a community that was looking for a better life because it was bored in the real world. The scenes with Robert Carlyle are a beautiful manifestation of the modern concept of madness. There’s not a single likeable character.

Werewolf by Night (2022) (TV elokuva)

englanti It was good. Giacchino fulfils his childhood dreams and after composing film music, he also makes films like he did in his cellar when he was a kid. The horror atmosphere is fine, even the quite surprising plot with the lesson that monsters stick together. Maybe the visual effects sequences and the black and white stylisation are a bit weird.

DC Superlemmikkien liiga (2022)

englanti A giant sow standing on a skyscraper?! The classic theme of oblivious masters with a superheroic setting offers some good jokes, well-paced action and a fairly infantile plot. The main villain is properly psychopathic and the disparate band of heroes is quite entertaining. Nothing extraordinary, nothing extraordinarily bad. Decent fun for the little fans of animals and DC. P.S: The post-credit scene is quite something. Black Adam’s dog is very unlikeable, if it is in the film, I’m not going to the cinema :)

Blonde (2022)

englanti Andrew Dominik recreates the heavy atmosphere surrounding Norma Jean’s horrific life right from the very first scene, with Hollywoodland in flames. His work with the picture, alternating cameras, colors and lighting and even picture size surprisingly enhances the storytelling, rather than being a distraction. Ana de Armas’ performance is fantastic, styled as housewife on the brink of madness, slash promiscuous movie star. The way the story is broken up into separate scenes is sometimes confusing, but necessary, otherwise the movie would have to last four hours. The dream and drug sequences at the end are a delight. The premiere of Some Like It Hot ("I Love Love Love You All") with the monster photographers is the high point of the whole movie. It is certainly more watchable than Mank, but Blonde just isn’t a movie for everybody. If you let it, it’ll swallow you whole. P.S.: The White House scene is far from a disappointment!

Rick and Morty - Night Family (2022) (jakso)

englanti An ideal pre-sleep watch. Nighttime versions of us who do what we don’t want to is a concept taken to perfection. And it’s all crowned by a wild action sequence flirting with parody. One of the best episodes. Who wants a six-pack like that?!

Taivas ja maa (1993)

englanti Oliver Stone looks at the Vietnam War for a third time, this time through the eyes of civilians in the cross-fire. Inspired by the true story of a Vietnamese refugee leads the viewer through all of the lying that attempts to justify needless provocation by one or the other side of the conflict. The closing scene where the excellent Tommy Lee Jones comes sauntering in shows the real face of war. Arms trafficking, money and territory - what else is war about? And it’s nobody’s and at the same time everybody’s fault. Both sides of any conflict represent evil. That’s food for thought, especially right now.

Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022)

englanti Brutally meta. And maybe so much so, that most people won’t get it. And the target audience is tiny. In terms of style, Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers follows on from Who Killed Roger Rabbit, but modernizes it, turns it upside down and draws on Mickey’s wide pallet of characters. It contains millions of nods (Roger’s quattro-cameo is just psycho) and funny references. Just the situation reigning at the beginning, where Dale is a defunct series star, Chip is a postman, Monty Jack is just a junkie with debts and Zip and Gadget hump with no condom so often that they have 12 kids already, sets the bar very high. An unexpected surprise.

Day Shift (2022)

englanti A rather shaky B-movie, where the pretty poor screenplay is saved by lively action and some great ideas. Foxx is enjoying himself, but that’s about it; the role of a pool cleaner is terribly hackneyed. Even Dave Franco has more interesting character development (stops peeing himself). Just another lukewarm offering from Netflix. One of the few things that I liked were the Hawaiian shirts.

Pinocchio (2022)

englanti Zemeckis’ retelling of the Disney classic has its moments, but overall it comes across a little half-assed, both in the modernization as against the original and in the visual approach. Pinocchio tries to warn kids against the evil of influencers and the dangers of showbiz, but while doing so he turns formerly enchanting moments in the story into a breakneck blurt. There are maybe too many songs for my liking, but my daughter liked that, so I have no complaints. The way they brought the wooden puppet to life was fantastic. Hanks was really affected, maybe over-acting. Silvestri’s music is great. P.S.: Maybe they threw Pinocchio out of school because he put the apple for teacher next to the horse dung and the race bit was just an excuse. Maybe...

Marvel Studios: Assembled (2021) (sarja)

englanti Physical movie carriers are almost dead and one of the few reasons for spending money on them is if you are a collector and desire something extra, a desire for bonuses and documentaries. But now Disney+ and Assembled are making even this reason redundant. The formally well-made "the making of" documentaries about movies and series beginning with WandaVision vary in quality even according to the filmmakers who made the movies in question. Nobody does better than the genius look at Loki, but Bruce Campbell and his witty interjections regarding the Multiverse of Madness was also very entertaining. Let’s see what they come up with next.
