Václav Vorlíček and Miloš Macourek's coproduction fairy tale translates the classic story and famed ballet Swan Lake INTO the language of fun, adventure, and magic. The evil Queen of the Lake Empire tries to destroy the love between Prince Victor and enchanted Princess Odette. The narrative is rounded out with other stories telling of, for example, young pearl gatherers imprisoned by the cruel ruler of the underwater world, and the sad tale of the water sprite's wife. englanti The rising darkness of Czech fairy tales has been taken to the extreme here - most of the story takes place in a dim palace, Chýlková is more than terrifying, children collect pearls and barely get enough to eat, and younger viewers may be traumatized by it. Not to mention the impact one bigger fish had on me during my visit to the cinema back then. However, even after years, it is one of the best post-revolution fairy tales, and definitely the best of those in German co-production. The combination of the beautiful Jitka Schneiderová and the unpolished lines of Jan Hrušínský still works perfectly. ()
