Ensi-esityksensä vuonna 1990 saanut sarja lukeutuu edelleen kaikkien aikojen kattavimpiin luontodokumentteihin. Sarja pureutuu eläinten äärettömän vaihtelevaan käyttäytymiseen, ja perehdyttää katsojan mitä lumoavimpiin – ja myös pelottavimpiin – eläinkunnan persoonallisuuksiin. Emosta erkaneminen, ravinnon etsiminen, kodin rakentaminen, puolison löytäminen; joka päivä tuo mukanaan uuden haasteen jopa hyväkuntoisimmalle ja parhaiten sopeutuvalle eläinlajille. David Attenborough avustajineen vietti sarjan tekemiseen kolme ja puoli vuotta, ja matkustuskilometrejä kertyi yli 400.000. Tuloksena syntyi mitä kiehtovin ja oivaltavin dokumenttisarja.
