Chaddr: A River Between Us

There are still places on our planet that are almost completely cut off from civilisation. With the advent of global climate change, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the people in these places to live a normal life. The Chadar is a trail along a frozen river in Ladakh, a Himalayan region on the Indo-Pakistani border. Seventeen-year-old Stanzin must make a hazardous journey several times a year to reach a distant school and fulfil her dream of a better life. Her parents make a living as small farmers. Although they live very modestly, they try to give their children the opportunity to obtain the best possible education. But this means prolonged separation from the family and frequent loneliness. For Stanzin, the river trip becomes an opportunity to reflect on their lives against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world. What will she do when one day the river stops freezing over and the journey to her family becomes practically impossible? (One World)
