An entire town bathed in pulsing human blood from madmen crazed for carnage! The 2000 Maniacs of a small Southern town celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Civil War by forcing a handful of Northerners to serve as "guests" for a variety of macabre, blood-crazed fun and games. The festivities include a screaming man placed in a rolling barrel lined with nails, a hit-the-bull's-eye carnival game with a pretty gal and a boulder, and a blonde sexpot whose arm is hacked off and barbecued! Herschell Gordon Lewis made this movie a year after the “famous” gorefest Blood Feast. Having been trained in the art of directing, he was no longer making rookie mistakes. And this time he’s funnier, seeing things with detached humor and conceiving the endearing deviance as decadently and darkly humorous gore-absurdity in which the most violent scenes alternate with the comical performances of the small-town hicks, underscored with breezy country music. Two Thousand Maniacs is colourful and cheerful debauchery with terrible acting (a trademark of the director’s films) and a very distinctive creative “feel”. Three stars in the ranking ruled by Bad Taste.
