At age twelve Clayton Bates lost his left leg in an accident. As an amateur dancer he fought and overcame this tragedy and started performing as Peg Leg Bates. He became an international vaudeville star and a jazz dance legend. One of the few black stars to appear on television, millions of viewers saw him regularly in the Ed Sullivan tv shows. Against the background of a changing society the dancing man: peg leg bates deals with his remarkable life and career. In the 1950s Bates opened a holiday resort in the segregated Catskill Mountains, which he was to run until 1989. The Peg Leg Bates country club was the holiday destination for black people into the 1970s. On the closing night the stars from the world of the jazz dance as well as young talents pay tribute to Bates in performances inspired by his legendary, bloodcurdling rhythms. The film contains a great deal of archive footage, and colleagues from the world of dance and entertainment like Gregory Hines, Honi Coles, Chuck Green, Rutch Brown and Percy Sutton, the owner of the Apollo Theatre, comment on Bates' influence as a teacher, his artistic inspiration and his friendship. The voice over in the film is by Bates himself, who at age 83 still appears to be a magnificent storyteller. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
