While Kurdish gigolo Baran dreams of a future in Europe, German pilot Marion is struggling to come to terms with her cancer diagnosis. When the two meet at the Turkish holiday resort of Marmaris, they engage in a kind of double-cross and decide to enter into a sham marriage. After a promising beginning, a shared future seems well within their reach. But things turn out not to be quite as simple as that. Emotions and fears complicate their arrangement, especially since both of them hold more than one secret. Eventually, they have to decide which of their dreams they want to follow — and whether they can still be together. Directo Ilker Çatak has succeeded in crafting a powerful drama that tells a story along the crumbling lines of global capitalism. (Filmfest München)

englanti During the film, I realized that this film is typically German. This is already evident in the opening credits when the typical German Ilker Çatak appears on the director’s chair. And he immediately showed us the beach resort in Marmaris, where I was quite shocked as I had no idea that German travel agencies are offering accommodation in hotels in Turkey where local Turkish gigolos will provide their services to you on the beach. I was really surprised about this. Were I a woman, I’d only book my holidays in Germany from now on. Then the story starts and we meet the main character, a Kurd helped by a German woman who takes him to Germany in an attempt to make a European out of him. National stigmas are no laughing matter, what can I say. In terms of story, however, it’s a decent, well-executed drama, so the film-loving part of my soul was satisfied. ()

englanti A well-made drama with a pretty original central duo and story. I enjoyed the cold environment, the simple screenplay and wonderfully built atmosphere. However, what kills this movie is the two-hour running time, which makes the style it’s filmed in rather monotonous and at some points it seems that nothing’s happening. It’s certainly worth a watch, but you probably won’t ever come back to it to watch it again. ()
