The screenwriting/directing debut of father/son duo Víťo and Richard Staviarsky is a tragicomedy about an unconventional East Slovak romance. This sad yet funny tale of life’s sorrows, longing and hope plays out in the quaint surroundings of carnivals. When sweet vendor Milan learns that the gypsy Veronika stole two nougat bars just because she was hungry, he feels sorry for her and treats her to lunch. They fall in love and start to plan their life together. Veronika doesn’t mind that Milan has just one leg; Milan doesn’t care that she’s Romany. But will this unconventional couple be accepted by Slovak society? Will they be able to stand up for their love? This bittersweet East Slovak comedy about unfulfilled love offers an unusual summertime romance full of action, dramatic twists and witty, keenly observed dialogue. (Art Film Fest)

englanti A pleasant feel-good flick standing on the foundation of a likable couple with effective chemistry. The film is as authentic and endearing as the pretty Romani actress in the lead role, and just as immediate and naïve in a childlike way. It is sensibly handled, however, with aptly depicted cultural frictions (see the no-nonsense, indignant performance of the conservative mother) and the sad impossibility of a person to break free from his or her social class in order to have a dignified life. The dialogue is about nothing in places, but it is natural for the given situation and type of characters. [3Kino Fest] ()
