To film one of the most typical Holmes stories in such a way that it is interesting, even though the viewer knows what (doesn't) happen, is probably quite a thankless task. But it worked, and what's more, it turned out great. The angry Jeremy Brett is excellent in the opening minutes of the great finale of the second series, but he's equally great in the last act, when Holmes knows exactly what's coming and is just waiting for it to come. David Burke owes his colleague nothing, and Moriarty is truly diabolical.
