‘In the end, DJ‘s are just guys playing other people‘s music.‘ In the music documentary Hang the DJ, this judgement is repeatedly refuted. ‘DJ‘s are today‘s pop stars‘, another passer-by shouts. With dexterous and mysterious movements, they touch the vinyl to create a potent dance mix that subsequently booms from the speakers. The crowds are willingly whipped up by these kings of the turntable. DJ‘s are cool. Sweaty girls with very low-cut shirts praise their qualities, beaming boys express their admiration. The debuting filmmakers and brothers Marco and Mauro La Villa travelled the whole world and frequented many parties to ask famed DJ‘s like Dimitri, Cut Killer and Junior Vasquez about scratching, being a role model for young people, and the volatility of fame and fortune. Nowadays, many of them extend their services to top artists like Madonna and Janet Jackson, but some of them still have the underground feel streaming through their veins.
