A romance between a young widow and a sea captain's ghost weaves a magical tale of immortal love. Determined to live her life the way she wants, newly widowed Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) declines her straitlaced in-laws demand that she live with them and moves with her daughter (a young Natalie Wood) to the seaside into a cottage haunted by the handsome, blustering Captain Gregg (Rex Harrison). A deal is struck between the two in the wee hours of the morning allowing Lucy to stay in the house and the captain to materalize only in the master bedroom. As they gradually get to know each other better, Lucy's spunk and stubborness gains first the captain's grudging respect, then his heart. But when another man woos Lucy, both must face that her future lies with the living, not in the spirit world. (jakelijan virallinen teksti)

englanti The transformation of a ghostly horror movie into an emancipation drama was just as surprising for me as the heroine’s reaction to the paranormal activity in her new home: “Haunted. How perfectly fascinating.” Mrs. Muir displays the same prudence later, when she comes to understand that the ghost of the sailor, whose actions make it clear to everyone that he is in charge (a phallic spyglass dominates several scenes), embodies long since discarded values and that it would be best if she accepted him as her collaborator, as the masculine side of herself. Only his advice can make her the mistress of her own domain. The film most urgently encourages us to not be afraid to dream in the final minutes. Because the film was directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who perfectly understood the weight of words but underestimated the power of images, the minutes preceding the ending are as agonisingly long as the wait for the man of one’s dreams. That ending, however, is heavenly. 80% ()

englanti A beautiful romantic film, where the romance lies in the fact that those two can never truly love each other. Yes, it is a supernatural film, but it certainly does not lack taste. The central couple also fits together very well. They may not be as big stars as others of that time, but it doesn't matter at all because they are wonderfully pleasant and charismatic. A splendid ending! ()
