The Witch in the Window on psykologinen kauhutrilleri, jonka keskiössä ovat 12-vuotias Finn (Charlie Tacker) ja isänsä Simon (Alex Draper). Näyttämönä on Yhdysvaltain koilliskolkassa Vermontissa sijaitseva ränsistynyt autiotalo, jonka tuoreen avioeron riipimä Simon on hankkinut remontoidakseen sen myyntikuntoon. Isä ja poika saapuvat viettämään keskinäistä laatuaikaa maaseudun rauhaan Manhattanin kaaoksesta. Seesteisyys alkaa säröillä, kun Finn on aistivinaan uudessa ympäristössä jotain outoa. Epäluulot saavat lisää tuulta alleen, kun Simon ja Finn kohtaavat lähimmän naapurinsa Louisin (Greg Naughton). Seudulla pikkupojasta asti asunut Louis raottaa tulokkaille salaisuuksien verhoa, joka liittyy autiotalon karmivaan menneisyyteen ja vaiettuihin salaisuuksiin. (Night Visions Distribution)

The films of Andy Mitton so far have always bored me, but this time at least he hits the spot – or how to conceive the tired haunted-house genre with originality and almost no money. The characters are fun, they behave slightly differently than in similar films. I also had fun looking for the ghost of the witch, who often simply appears in the scene without the director needing any jump-scares to draw attention to her. And the story is enjoyable, too, it evolves into a surprisingly emotional drama with a very well executed chilling twist at the end. This film may not be not gratifying enough for the viewers to get Mitton into a wider audience, but as a sample of independent genre filmmaking, is almost perfect.

The genre of this relatively soft and unscary ghost film stands in between a family drama and a child-friendly horror flick. I have to say that time passes quickly, the script isn’t bad at all and the whole thing is fun – at times the viewer can play and look for the hidden ghost silhouette in the background. Other than that, there’s no real innovation and no surprises. This flick is fine as a distraction, but it has no bigger ambition than that. And the title is a bit confusing – this is not a film about witches!
