Luis Buñuel, the most iconic and provocative Spanish filmmaker of all time, pushed conventional boundaries from the very start of his career. Censors and outraged conservatives threatened to block him from making films when he had scarcely begun; but Buñuel’s mighty voice was not a talent that could be silenced. In 1933, he travelled to a remote rural area of Spain to make an infamous short documentary, Las Hurdes, aka Land Without Bread, capturing the customs of a people who lived in a land that time had forgotten — banned upon release by the Spanish government.
