Elokuva kertoo 16-vuotiaan John Paul Getty III:n (Charlie Plummer) kidnappauksesta ja hänen omistautuneen äitinsä Gailin (Michelle Williams) epätoivoisesta yrityksestä saada poikansa miljonääri isoisä (Christopher Plummer) maksamaan lunnaat.
