A movie projectionist and janitor (Buster Keaton) who is studying to become a detective is in love with a beautiful girl (Kathryn McGuire). On a date he presents her with chocolates and an engagement ring. However, there is another man who's also interested in his girl (Ward Crane). One day he is accused of stealing his girlfriend's father's watch. This is definitely one of the best Keaton films I've seen so far, second only to The General. In terms of the story (a perfect parody) and the inventiveness of the gags (the killer chair, the pool table, the motorcycle ride), the incredible special effects and the charming atmosphere (the entry to the film, the tie seller's leap), everything is top-notch.

Buster Keaton absolutely amazes us with how the individual stunts are captured. It takes your breath away, even after ninety years. Nowadays, some stunt scenes don't look as good by any means. It's a shame that classic tricks and stunts are disregarded today, especially since everyone has insurance. Digital effects are sometimes infuriating, and this is a beautiful example. An excellent film that proves silent films can captivate today's audience.

The opening drags a bit, but what comes in the second half is perhaps the best detective parody of all time. Two moments in particular gave me the kind of fits of laughter that I hadn’t had in long time – where did they get such ideas? 85%
