Abby arrives in Bangkok to meet up with her best friend on a backpacking adventure through paradise. Instead she receives a video with her friend tied to a chair, terrified, and being held in a dungeon. A madman in a clown mask invites Abby to play a game. A game of hide-and-seek through Thailand in which Abby's hope is to rescue her friend. As Abby's adventure unfolds, she continues to question the legitimacy of what's going on, and unknowingly she becomes the centerpiece of a sociopath's cinematic vision. To be honest, I didn't really care what happened to the characters in Land of Smiles. It's as if the filmmakers couldn't come up with even one that could engage you and make you want to finish watching the film. There are no big surprises. Honestly, the clowns seem to just be shoved in there and feel out of place. This was a failure, which is tragic given the interesting setting.
