Our story centres around a small German town that would look exactly like dozens of other small German towns, situated near a vast forest, if it wasn’t for the imposing nuclear power plant that seems to stretch beyond the horizon. The plant holds a mystery of such magnitude that it has permeated through everything and everyone in town, poisoning the minds of both the generation who remember what it was all about, and their descendants – who were raised in a completely different world. The series tells the story of four influential families whose members will have to face not only physical obstacles and threats, but also their inner demons, hidden beneath masks of normalcy. Adults commit suicide, children go missing, massacred cadavers appear out of nowhere, and there are unnerving lights and sounds in a mysterious forest cave leading to god knows where. The past intertwines with the present and marks the future; while time, whimsical as always, waits for no man. No one will leave the town unharmed. (Camerimage)

Season 1 (2017) (S01)

englanti The first season wasn’t all that impressive but, then again, not a total disappointment either. The first half of the series seemed rather unconvincing, the second half was much more balanced. The writing was much better, and I had a great time as a result. At first, the whole thing strongly reminded me of Stranger Things, later it also made me remember Brian Lumley's “Necroscope” series. The resemblance to the Perchorsk Incident was considerable (minus the vampires). 4*- ()

Geheimnisse (2017) (S01E01)

englanti I had to hold back on giving more than three stars for the opener because, honestly, I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I just watched. But the atmosphere was top-notch. My only gripe was feeling a tad unoriginal, and I could tell where the writer took their inspiration from. ()

Lügen (2017) (S01E02)

englanti Okay, I've got the hang of it now, and I'm kinda torn. On the one hand, I'm totally digging the series — great atmosphere, suspense, and tension. But on the flip side, I can't shake off this feeling that it's riding the Stranger Things wave a bit too hard, especially with that power plant. ()

Gestern und Heute (2017) (S01E03)

englanti The story set in 1986 was a blast — I vibed with the soundtrack, and the creators took their time introducing everyone, which was cool. But one thing made me wonder. Mikkel acing the Rubik's Cube wasn't a shocker, but the way he immediately knew how to use the telephone dial gave me a pause. ()

Doppelleben (2017) (S01E04)

englanti Seems like I'm getting hooked on the '80s vibe, even though this episode wasn't as good as the last one. The series keeps throwing out suspects left and right, but they always end up being dead ends. It's a bit predictable at this point, but hey, at least Elizabeth had a funny hat. ()

Wahrheiten (2017) (S01E05)

englanti The fifth episode stayed slightly above average for me once again. I thought about bumping up the rating to four stars because of the events at the end, but it lacked that element of surprise. The creators had been hinting at this development for a while, so there were no twists for me. ()

Sic mundus creatus est (2017) (S01E06)

englanti Well, this time around, things picked up, courtesy of Jonas. The trek through the caves could've been shorter, but I found myself oddly enjoying the discussions about old grudges and betrayals. The only thing missing in Winden now is Mr. Gaunt and his shop. ()

Kreuzwege (2017) (S01E07)

englanti The seventh episode might not have ironed out all the kinks, but I found myself enjoying it more than before so I decided to bump up my rating. ()

Was man sät, das wird man ernten (2017) (S01E08)

englanti Alright, the creators really blew my mind this time. I was already very satisfied with the episode set in 1986, but I didn't expect this ace up their sleeve. The 66-year time jump was truly successful and the development (or rather destruction) of Ulrich's psyche was excellent. ()

Alles ist jetzt (2017) (S01E09)

englanti This episode didn’t grip me as much as the last one. The confrontation between Katharina and Hannah felt like it dragged the story down. That said, I love seeing how the characters evolve over the 66 (or 33)-year timelines. The episodes towards the end of the season are resonating with me much more than the earlier ones. ()

Alpha und Omega (2017) (S01E10)

englanti The final episode was a mixed bag for me — half disappointing, half satisfying. I ended up giving it a weak four stars. It felt like the creators got a bit tangled in their own script, and the ending was rushed and a bit unfinished. Despite that, I enjoyed the overall plot and the intriguing open-ended conclusion. I'll definitely be tuning in for the next season. 4*- ()
