A Trip to the Moon follows a group of travellers who jet off to the moon from earth on an exploration mission only to end up in peril and captured by the the local inhabitants, the Selenites. Featuring a whos who of theatrical cast from the era, with Méliès himself taking a lead role, this is one of the very first forays into sci-fi cinema, and spawned one of the most iconic images of cinema the man in the moon with a rocket in his eye. Charming, adorable, impressive. Words can't describe it, it has to be seen, but I can't help but share at least a few sentences: The camera is static, the whole film consists of only 14 shots, full of strange little people and cardboard backdrops that are simply delightful. From the model of the spaceship to the surface of the moon and its inhabitants, everything bears the traces of Meliés's enormous imagination, full of wonderfully naive ideas. And the moon-people, they are simply adorable. The film is short, but it will leave an indelible mark on you. And the effects? They have lost none of their charm even after a century. 101 years, four generations... how is it possible?

Seeing the restored colorized version on the big screen was really great. The new music by AIR seemed almost out of place in the opening scene, but I have to admit that it gave the rest of A Trip to the Moon a remarkably playful atmosphere (not that the film needed it, of course).___P.S. I saw the film again in the movie theatre this year, this time with music by Jeff Mills, and Méliès's great outing is not lacking anything even after 115 years.

For any film enthusiast, this is as beautiful an experience as watching the first wink of a newborn baby. Immortal nostalgia that the effects of time will never erode :-)

Yes, it's very old, yes, it's basically like a theater, but in this film you can see a lot how these foundations shaped the film and actually the genre. The scenes that are here are repeated in other movies, the motifs that you see here influence culture - not only film - up to the present day. In this legendary work, it is possible to find elements that were used, for example, in Tintin. The film has funny scenes for its time, which have the right impact even to this day. Although the film is 14 minutes long, it is incredibly extravagant, epic, even though everything happened actually on one scene, where only the scenery changed. Méliès also created a colored version, which was restored in the new millennium and it is also possible to watch it. Hand coloring in such an old film is something truly unique. Moreover, the film manages to amaze in terms of special effects as well, because for example, the killing of the Selenites is really technically well done.
