The Factory of the World presents a series of static, photographic-style video images from a small town and empty former electronics factory in northern Finland. The factory was closed in 2003 when the production was moved to Shenzhen, China. The images are juxtaposed with audio narration about conditions experienced by workers in electronics manufacturing factories in China. The work draws a connection between the workers in the small town in Finland and in the city of Shenzen, which is inhabited by 15 million people. While these places are geographically distant and culturally distinct, the lives and destinies of these people are connected in the global networks of commerce and capitalism.
