Joanna Eberhartin (Nicole Kidman) lähes täydellinen elämä mullistuu äkillisesti televisiouran huipulla, eikä paluuta entiseen ole. Joanna jättää hektisen Manhattanin miehensä Walterin (Matthew Broderick) ja kahden lapsensa kanssa ja perhe muuttaa idylliseen Stepfordin yhteisöön Connecticutissa, missä Joanna löytää pian hengenheimolaisia muista uusista tulokkaista. Kirjailija Bobbie Markowitz (Bette Midler) ja arkkitehti Roger Bannister (Roger Bart) ovat myös paenneet kiireistä New Yorkia esikaupungin rauhaan, mutta sopeutuminen ei ole ihan helppoa. Stepfordin naiset toteuttavat amerikkalaista unelmaa palvellen miehiään hymyssä suin. Toimintaa organisoi aina huoliteltu ja superystävällinen Claire Wellington (Glenn Close). Hänen miehensä Mike (Christopher Walken) on puolestaan miesten klubin ehdoton pomo. Tulokkaat otetaan erittäin lämpimästi vastaan, mutta vähitellen Joannaa alkaa epäilyttää Stepfordin naisten pullantuoksuinen täydellisyys. Miksi kaikki ovat kuin robotteja? Mitä miesten klubilla oikein tapahtuu? Stepfordin naiset kurkistaa kulissien takaiseen todellisuuteen täydellisessä esikaupunkiyhteisössä, missä kaikki ovat kuin toistensa klooneja. Mutta onko täydellisyys onnen mitta? Ja kuka päättää, mikä on täydellistä? Koomisen jännitystarinan muissa rooleissa nähdään mm. Jon Lovitz, David Marshall Grant ja Faith Hill. (Buena Vista Int. I haven't read the book or seen the original 70s film version until now. Therefore, I don't have to deal with the eternal problem of how shamefully and directly the screenwriter and director dealt with sacred models. Departing from the original genre and making a sci-fi comedy seems like a very reasonable idea, a similar concept can't be taken seriously anymore. I openly admit that I enjoyed it more than most current comedies, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are full of original, sparkling humor. It rather reflects my positive attitude towards sci-fi and what is liked, is also easily criticized. Oz's direction is fine within his possibilities, weaknesses are more evident in the script. The cast is decent and Nicol Kidman's performance is a perfect hit. Overall impression 55%.

The atmosphere is lackluster, the technical execution is very inconsistent, and the film as a whole simply feels weird. The problem is that it presents the topic with such a dose of stupidity and directorial incompetence, and the actors overact in such a crazy way that it's horrifying.

The weakest Frank Oz film I've seen so far... I was especially astonished at how he didn't even try to build a mysterious atmosphere, and almost everything that others would hide for the end, he actually disclosed from the beginning. The ending was completely moronic, but even so it seems to me that it wasn't bad, but simply just an average black comedy that was supposed to be better.

This was such a shitty movie that did not impress me at all. Maybe there was just a slightly above average Nicole Kidman, however, that is really, really not enough to be awarding the movie more than one star.
