Danish couple Louise and Kasper live a secluded life in close contact with nature. Their house lies in a lonely spot in a forest by a lake; there is neither electricity nor mobile phone reception – something Elena, their young home help from Romania, still has to get used to. Once in a while she uses the only telephone at the house to call her young son who is growing up far away with her parents. Louise is very weak; she has just suffered a miscarriage and is now no longer able to have children. In order to realise her greatest dream, to be a mother, she makes a pact with Elena: if Elena concedes to act as a surrogate mother and give birth to Louise's child, she will be handsomely paid. Elena agrees. But when the embryo that has been placed in her womb begins to grow far too quickly, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary pregnancy. Tensions grow and the two women lock horns in a bitter power struggle. And the horror is far from being over with the birth. Dark forces are unleashed in this genre piece which alludes in its title to the classic horror film Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. (Berlinale)

englanti I haven’t been disappointed with a Nordic movie for a long time. That is until I saw Shelley, a copy of Rosemary’s Baby, which capitalizes on the only interesting aspect of the movie – the environment of a secluded house in Denmark with a nice lake next to it as a bonus. Nothing happened in the movie for the entire hour and a half. There are people here who speak of an atmosphere, but that atmosphere would have to be atmospheric in any way for it to work at all. This one had nothing worth your interest and the only moment that was at least a bit interesting was the ending. But the director would have managed to shoot such a punchline even within a short movie within no more than five minutes and he wouldn’t have had to ruin our lives with it. ()

englanti Shelley is somewhat of a contradictory film. It has a clearly defined storyline, which is fine on the one hand, but on the other it's simply boring. It has scenes that are breathtaking in what they depict and how they depict it, and then suddenly it seems like it's almost hippie agitprop. It's very unbalanced, which is a shame and the reason why I give the film only an average rating. ()
