Phantasy Star Online 2 is the most popular game on the web, and almost everyone at Seiga Academy is deeply immersed in it. When the school administration begins to worry that the game is causing more harm than good, student council president Rina Izumi sets out to prove PSO2's virtual positives. To confirm her opinion, she recruits Itsuki Tachibana, one of the few students who isn't already hooked, and instructs him to learn how to play so she can study the effects. What at first seems like a brilliant and simple plan instead lifts the lid off a Pandora's Box filled with unexpected complications. As Itsuki's life undergoes a rapid transformation, it soon becomes clear that PSO2 may be much more than merely a game! (Sentai Filmworks)

englanti The fundamental problem in my opinion is that every time I read about an anime series SonGokussj reviews on FilmBooster, I believe it has something that sets it apart from the previous ones and could take this increasingly popular theme of the RPG world somewhere new. This one, however, has nothing after the first episode! Aside from the fact that the anime's creators focused on science fiction instead of fantasy RPGs, there is nothing to motivate me to pick this up. No great innovation, no unique character, hilarious humor, or interesting concept focused on a certain aspect of RPGs. However, they obviously tried. The beginning is meant to give some impression that this will be an epic anime series full of big battles and effects. I find the soundtrack just about the only interesting thing about this show. The action and special effects did not impress me, and the animation, as SonGokussj said in his review (it takes place in an RPG world), is very repulsive and too artificial. Another part focusing on the ordinary world was long-winded, boring, and did not make any sense at all. I once again did not understand who could be imagining these things up. I discovered that a young boy coming to school with a school bag and in a school uniform is just terribly suspicious when he does not have his student ID on him. I guess the fact he is wearing the "right school colors and other items" does not work as an argument. Plus, the dialogue exchange along the lines of "you are suspicious," "no, I am not suspicious," "yes you are suspicious" was childish on a kindergarten level. Many of the unique twists feel silly, and the reasons why the main male protagonist was chosen to be on the student council and why he has to play PSO2 had me sort of shake my head in disbelief. The point with the character creation and how it turned out totally blew me away, and it still was not over. The main male protagonist is a total "loser", however, when they offer him help, he calmly refuses it. Indeed, the robot and his poses and the way he struts around would not have endeared him to me either, but still. The ending brought one small skirmish with a similar quality to the first scene, and that was more or less it. My final impression after the first episode is that while I should be enjoying this because it is a subject close to my heart, I am annoyed, bored, and do not understand what I am watching again. As far as the later episodes are concerned, a significant improvement only starts to appear at the very end, when someone finally decided to come up with something interesting and original. So we get a science-fiction world of RPG gaming, which in the end, does not come across as silly as it might seem at first glance. The only thing I do not understand is the fact why they come up with the interesting stuff so late. It came at a point when the less jaded viewer is long done with anime and when it was damn hard for me to overcome somehow the feeling of boredom I had while watching the first seven or so episodes. Still, they manage to do it, and I am starting to consider awarding this show perhaps even an average in the end, unless they somehow fatally screw up this final and, in my opinion, very good storyline. EDIT: The ending was pretty good, and the last fight was not completely pointless, though again, it was not very original. So I can say that they did not spoil the ending, so I am going to fulfill what I promised, and I am not going to reject PSO2 completely. 4.5/10. () (vähemmän) (lisää)
