Tapahtumat sijoittuvat Kööpenhaminaan, syksyllä 1720. Vara-amiraali Peter Wessel Tordenskjold on suuren Pohjan sodan sankari, mutta potee olemassaolon kriisiä. Tanska-Norjan laivastolla on ollut ylivalta, mutta sodan päätyttyä 29-vuotiaan sankarin on totuttava elämään maissa. Tordenskjold etsii lohtua viinasta ja naisista, mutta ratkaisu ei ole kestävä. Tordenskjoldin kamaripoika Christian Cold yrittää saada esimiehensä asettumaan aloilleen ja perustamaan perhettä, mutta vara-amiraali ei pidä ajatuksesta. Cold onnistuu lopulta ylipuhumaan Tordenskjoldin ja kaksikko suuntaa Englantiin kosimaan rikasta neiti Norrisia. Matkasta Tanskan halki Pohjois-Saksan valtakuntaan kehittyy hurjanlainen voittokulkue, joka riistäytyy käsistä. Aikakauden suuri tähti valloittaa naisten sydämet kaikkialla. Mutta matka ei etene suunnitellusti ja tummat pilvet synkistävät taivaan. Hannoverissa tarina näyttää lähestyvän loppuaan. Ruotsalainen vihollinen yrittää nitistää Tordenskjoldin. Vara-amiraalista on tullut hyvin vainoharhainen ja yhtäkkiä mies onkin hengenvaarassa. (YLE)

Rear Admiral Tordenskjold could have been used a lot better comedically. You only need to remember the series The Red Dwarf, where there were several scenes with the alleged Rear Admiral Rimmer, and he actually wasn’t even a rear admiral. I say this because the premise looks really great at first glance and if you were an unbiased viewer, you tell yourself, you could actually laugh quite a bit. But the opposite is true. The Danes handled it more seriously than they should have. You are actually bored during the movie in a way that makes you almost annoyed. The ending proves, however, that the creators from Denmark, so brace yourself and prepare for a tragedy. The Scandinavians are way better at that than at comedies. This film is solid proof of that. It is all the more a pity that a film like this was shot in the Czech Republic because the sets are flawless. The problem is the script that should have turned Tordenskjold into a funny and entertaining caricature and at the same time, it turned him into a slimy weakling who drinks, fucks, and says nothing of any value.

For some reason, I thought it would be a rather daring film, especially for a comedy, but surprisingly, it's not that daring. It's just quite vulgar in places. It's funny at first, but then you are supposed to start believing that it's based on a real event. And it stops being interesting, even fun. The characters aren't bad, but they just can’t carry it the whole time.
