A municipality with 22 million inhabitants, Mexico City lies on the site of a former lake. Where water once collected naturally, there now is an alarming lack of it. Water must be redirected from neighbouring regions at great cost. Polluted wastewater from the megalopolis then runs like a sludgy river through rural areas, where farmers use it to irrigate their fields. But there is a solution to this difficult situation; a promising engineering project by the Isla Urbana organisation to collect rainwater is only just getting started. This unsettling film combines expert insight with the personal stories of people directly affected by the situation. (One World)
