We are your friends kertoo oman äänen etsimisestä tässä maailmassa. Elektronisen musiikin maailmaan ja Hollywoodin yöelämään sijoittuvassa elokuvassa lupaava 23-vuotias DJ-kokelas Cole (Zac Efron) viettää päivät kavereidensa kanssa hengaillen ja yöt yrittäen työstää sitä yhtä biisiä, joka sytyttäisi ihmiset kaikkialla. Kaikki tämä muuttuu, kun hän tapaa karismaattisen, mutta ongelmia huokuvan vanhemman DJ:n Jamesin (Wes Bentley), joka ottaa hänet suojatikseen.
