Peter (Levi Miller) on ilkikurinen 12 -vuotias poika, joka on aina kapinoimassa. Karu lontoolainen orpokoti, jossa hän on asunut koko elämänsä, ei kuitenkaan ole paras paikka kepposille. Eräänä ihmeellisenä yönä Peter kiidätetään pois orpokodista, kauas fantasiamaailmaan nimeltä Mikä-Mikä-Maa, joka on täynnä merirosvoja, sotureita ja keijuja. Siellä hän päätyy uskomattomiin seikkailuihin ja taistelee henkensä edestä saadakseen jäädä taianomaiseen maailmaan. Yhdessä soturi Tiikerililjan (Rooney Mara) ja uuden ystävänsä Koukun (Garret Hedlund) kanssa Peterin täytyy kukistaa armoton merirosvo Mustaparta (Hugh Jackman) pelastaakseen Mikä-Mikä-Maan ja selvittääkseen oma todellinen kohtalonsa – hänestä on tuleva sankari nimeltä Peter Pan.
