Melaza

Melaza, a sleepy Cuban village where money used to be earned in a recently closed factory for processing sugarcane, is the home of a young couple, Mónica and the local teacher Aldo. They live in a small house together with Mónica's little daughter and grandmother. One of their sources of income is an occasional, not entirely legal rental of the house to the girl's prostitute friend. The couple is heavily fined after police intervention, and they must somehow get the money, even if the price to pay is too high. Carlos Lechuga's feature debut combines the absurdity of Cuban village life, bitter comedy and serious topics, simultaneously proving that one can live through the most severe crises when walking hand in hand.
