A half-crumbling military base, soon to be shut down, is home to a community of women whose husbands are serving as crewmen on a submarine. The wives patiently wait out the long days, hoping that their men will come back safely from yet another mission. The film portrays the lives of several very different women who are accustomed to looking after themselves despite their difficult circumstances. One of these lonely individuals is newlywed Lena, whose seemingly cold exterior and indifference towards the people and events going on around her start to irritate some of the older residents.... The film is loosely inspired by a real tragedy that occurred a few years back that sent tremors through the whole of Russia and beyond. Renowned director Yusup Razykov set his effectively constructed, understated drama in the icy winter landscape of northern Russia’s Kola Peninsula, whose desolation and chilling beauty is masterfully captured by cameraman Yuri Mikhailyshin. englanti This is a film where I felt sorry for the filmmakers in the theater for such lukewarm applause. On the other hand, it's hard to expect an audience to stand up and applaud a film that often doesn't make the slightest bit of sense, the motivations of the characters are utterly incomprehensible, and the whole thing doesn't let the audience in for even a split second. The cabin fever on land is just as cruel as the one at sea, but I also felt it toward the heroines at the end of the film. ()
