Biografia

Yusup Razykov (b. 1957, Tashkent, Uzbekistan) studied screenwriting at VGIK (1986). For his feature film debut The Orator (Voiz, 1999 – KVIFF 2000), in which he ridicules the hypocrisy and diligence of a naive revolutionary, he was awarded the Russian Critics’ Prize. He treated the freshly topical theme of polygamy in the incisive film Female Kingdom (Zhenskoye tsarstvo, 2000). As director of the Tashkent-based studio Uzbekfilm he shot the internationally successful Comrade Boykenzhayev (O’rtok Boykenjayjev, 2002 – KVIFF 2003), a grim farce illustrating the torpidity, primitivism and obsequiousness of Soviet-era functionaries. In The Gastarbeiter (2009 – KVIFF 2010) he expresses his alarm at the degeneration of a society pervaded by mafia activities.
