STANLEY KUBRICK: A LIFE IN PICTURES is a vastly entertaining look at master director Stanley Kubrick, made by the people who loved him most and knew him best. Jan Harlan, who worked with Kubrick for more than 30 years, put the film together with the help of Kubrick's widow, Christiane Kubrick, so it includes fabulous home movies of Kubrick as a young boy, as well as shots of the photographs he took when he worked for Look magazine before beginning his stellar film career. The documentary examines each of Kubrick's films, from the early short DAY OF THE FIGHT and FEAR AND DESIRE through FULL METAL JACKET and EYES WIDE SHUT, interviewing people associated with each project. Harlan also sheds light on some of Kubrick's unfinished works, including ARYAN PAPERS, NAPOLEON, and A.I., which Kubrick wanted Spielberg to direct--and after Stanley's death, Spielberg did indeed make the film, with Harlan serving as a producer. Clips are shown from each film, along with behind-the-scenes footage, both as stills and live action, showing Kubrick on the job, illuminating his work process and revealing him to be more of a much-loved friend and colleague than a reclusive tyrant. And of course, there are plenty of shots of Kubrick with his beloved pets and playing his favorite game, chess, which often made it into his films, however subtly. (jakelijan virallinen teksti)

englanti An engaging, content-rich documentary that would have benefited from a slightly less uncritical view. Supermen exist only in fairytales. ()

englanti A document that keeps the viewer's attention throughout its entire duration, which is an impressive feat for 142 minutes. For fans of Stanley Kubrick, it is a must-watch and likely to provide immense satisfaction. For me, as a viewer who does not worship Kubrick but recognizes and respects him, it is a valuable journey into the behind-the-scenes of his iconic works. Surprisingly, the most captivating aspects for me were the circumstances surrounding the creation of my favorite films, A Clockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Shut. I would endure the usual praise for the director, as it is well-deserved, but comments like "Film history is divided into the films before Kubrick and the films after Kubrick" have become a bit excessive. englanti Any lower rating is out of the question. Kubrick was a true genius, the likes of which will never be born again, and his films are a chapter of their own in the history of cinema. They were not only cinematically sophisticated and precise, but each carried a certain vision that often divided the society of the time into two warring camps. And while one side looked for something bad and controversial in every work, and actually drove Kubrick to a very solitary life, most of those who, like him, have delved deep into the mysteries of the filmmaking craft and view his films purely in terms of quality, clearly agree: Kubrick was the best, for all his perfectionism and occasional moodiness, he was a unique and strong personality whose ills were always erased and overcome by the amazing result of his enormous working passion. If you like his films at least a little, this interesting and celebratory documentary is a must. ()
