Orange Is the New Black

After the first two seasons, I'm fully satisfied. Jenji Kohan has once again created a perfect fusion of drama and comedy. The story gave me some food for thought, just like Weeds. It's definitely not a mindless affair. Those expecting mostly a comedy series will probably be disappointed. Some of the dramatic moments are downright chilling. I’d compare the series to Wentworth. Although the latter is pure drama, both build on excellent writing and a great cast, both feature flashback scenes that offer more insight into the characters’ lives, and both drew me right into the story. // Now that the series is over, let me just sum up: I wasn't thrilled with all of the seasons, especially the third and sixth seasons were weaker, but I did enjoy the series as a whole. After watching the first season, I have to say the series has one major issue. It’s the protagonist who I simply cannot root for. I hate people who get in more and more trouble through nobody’s fault but their own, then put on doe-eyes and annoy everybody around with their sad story. In any case, I was much more intrigued and amused by the fates of the other characters and I definitely rate the first season positively. (20.04.2019)

After some time, I decided to revisit OItNB to complete and possibly adjust my evaluation. Right from the first episode, I didn't enjoy it as much as I did years ago, although I don't mean to say that it was bad. I just remembered the episode to be funnier, when it comes to prison drama, Wentworth prevails for me. 3*+ (18.04.2019)

The second episode seemed to be a bit weaker compared to the first part. The dramatic part worked significantly better here than the comedic part, and that is definitely a shame. If there was more humor, I would have definitely added to the rating because the Australians handled this topic better. 3* (18.04.2019)

I strongly doubt that the character Sophie Burset could become my favorite, but even though the third episode was dedicated to her, it entertained me the most so far. The plot had a decent pace this time, and I enjoyed the transition of the prison to an austerity regime as well as the inclusion of the extremely "likeable" main protagonist into a non-conflict collective. I had a great time again, I admit that I enjoyed the fourth episode even more than the previous one. For the first time, the flashbacks really caught my attention, Miss Claudette is definitely an interesting character, but most importantly, there was an added sense of humor, which the series definitely needed. 4*+ (18.04.2019)

After two very decent episodes, I was rather disappointed. The fifth episode significantly lacked pace and a proper plot, the search for the legendary chicken really didn't interest me, so the situation had to be saved by religious disputes and a glimpse into the background of a typical Hispanic family. 3 stars. The sixth episode made up for the disappointment from the previous one. The creators finally gave more space for humor and it was very noticeable in the result. I really enjoyed the choices for the Prisoners' Council, the pre-election campaign practically didn't differ from our reality at all, and the victory of a person who didn't even run closed everything perfectly. I am certain that my rating would have been one star better if the creators didn't incorporate the character of Larry so much into the plot. His constant self-pity is seriously getting on my nerves, unnecessarily slowing down the pace of the story, and I'm just anxiously waiting for when he will also include the Holocaust in his suffering. Even this time, I was quite satisfied, the creators once again ensured a decent dose of humor, but in addition, the dramatic storyline also worked for me in the eighth episode, which I found to be more successful than in previous episodes, so yeah, I enjoyed it, I wasn't bored, and disappointment was not a threat in this case. I gave the episode five stars, kind of as a test, because once again I enjoyed a decent dose of humor, but mainly I enjoyed the development of the dramatic storyline, which was something I complained about in previous episodes. In the last two episodes, the creators succeeded much more in engaging me in the plot, so I am satisfied. (19.04.2019)

I have to commend the creator for the very well developed dramatic storyline, it was also the first time I didn't care at all about the comedic part, I really didn't miss it here. I would be fine without the morally instructive speech from Piper Chapman to the wheelchair user, but that was probably the only disturbing moment for me. (19.04.2019)

The eleventh episode was not bad at all, I actually only subtracted a star because the pace of the story slowed down a bit. Considering the torment for Trish, such development could be expected, so I'm not really complaining. However, I wasn't bored at all. 4*+ (20.04.2019)

In this case, I was still a little dissatisfied, I felt that the creators went a bit overboard with a number of unexciting conversations about relationships. The whole episode never reached a fast pace, but it had two very funny moments, for which I added half a star. The first one was an excellent flashback with the protector of the unborn, and the second one was the journalist's question about the saved 2.3 million dollars. 3.5 stars. (20.04.2019)

The conclusion really worked out for the creators, they managed to effectively start the dramatic storyline again, there were also some successful jokes and a solid atmosphere, and if it were up to me, I would gladly get rid of grumpy Larry from the series. This character has been annoying me for a while now and I could easily do without them. (20.04.2019)

Season 2 wasn’t bad at all, even though a couple of times I felt that the creators could have done a better job. Piper Chapman seemed a little less annoying this time. Either I got used to her or she wasn't such a crybaby anymore. However, it was fully compensated by the character of whining Larry, who was really punch-worthy. I also can't shake the feeling that adding a negative character for a single season was somewhat unnecessary. I think that Litchfield has a lot of characters to choose from, and this was just a simplification. (23.04.2019)

I had to admit that the start of the second season was not bad at all, and it practically revolved around the character of Piper Chapman, who definitely isn't among my favorites. Despite that sudden shift somewhere else, the creators managed to create an interesting atmosphere. I would like to warn sensitive individuals that Yoda's death was filmed very explicitly and could potentially traumatize these viewers. (21.04.2019)

The second episode didn't impress me too much, the creators returned its story back to Litchfield, but somehow forgot to make it interesting. The completely crazy preparation for future job interviews was perfectly American, and I really enjoyed the absurdity of it at times, but otherwise, it was a quite uneventful episode. 3 out of 5 stars. This time, I didn't feel any great enthusiasm, as if the creators forgot to add juice to the second season. I'm not sure if it was necessary to add a new (primarily negative) character to the story, I think that with the original cast, solid tension could have been built, especially since Vee is so transparent that tension cannot really be spoken of. 3* (21.04.2019)

No glory! It used to be better. The debate about female anatomy was perfect, I had a great time with it, I myself have encountered a similar conversation once, so I know that the creators captured it absolutely accurately:-) But the rest of the plot pleased me as well, this time boredom did not threaten me.
