The British-French production And Soon the Darkness is a good example of how you can make a very disturbing movie with a relatively short running time, with only a few actors, and where you can actually worry about the female protagonists, want to help them, and root for them at the same time. And Soon the Darkness has an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear. That atmosphere is still palpable even after fifty years, and the original is much better than the remake in this regard.
