For the majority of people, the subway merely represents a reliable means of transportation that quickly and safely transports them to their destination. Timo Novotny’s audiovisual essay, however, reveals that the underground railway is much more. It is quite literally the seedbed of a wide variety of human stories (New York), a center of diverse musical production (Los Angeles), a favored locale of suicide and sexual deviance (Tokyo), a glitzy tourist attraction (Moscow), or an ideal place for study or relaxation. Set to the excellent, uninterrupted soundtrack by Sofa Surfers (rightfully dubbed the Austrian Massive Attack), the filmmakers accompany us through the underground railways of several world metropolises, discovering what makes them unique. Sometimes visually reminiscent of a classy music video, this whimsical movie stands out for its original visual treatment and effective interplay of music and image. englanti Trains of Thought contains a few moments to which you can relate (e.g. the perception of collective anonymity among people in a train car), but as a whole it lacks a concept. Without a specific vision and goal, the filmmakers just made different shots, talked to different people on the subway and used the most interesting parts. Japan is excellent, thanks in part to the great narration. I have never seen Tokyo described so aptly in just 20 minutes. New York and Los Angeles are OK, but they don’t say anything new, just like Hong Kong, which says next to nothing about the passengers compared to Tokyo (we only learn that they’re bothered by the shopping malls built above subway stations). Moscow seems not to be there at all, and the world’s oldest subway (London) is neglected. ()
