After the fall of the Taliban in 2001, Afghanistan received a great deal of international attention and sponsors earmarked large sums of humanitarian aid for the country. A few months later, refugees began returning, making it imperative to provide work for adults and education for children. People in Need and other NGOs are trying to do just that in conditions that are far from stable. To make matters worse, in the last three years field commanders have become the most powerful rulers in the country. They number in the thousands and every village has its own “commandant.” Possessing plentiful arms and men, they often turn their weapons on one another. Nevertheless, development projects keep going thanks to the aid workers who believe they can help. This documentary captures a humanitarian team building a brick kiln and a school in an explosive region of Darai Suf. The inhabitants of a mountain valley have been at war against the surrounding world for decades; now the conflict has turned them on each other. (One World)
