While on summer vacation, the wife of Stéphane Monnereau, captain of the Parisian police force, disappears. Clues seem to indicate that he might have had something to do with her disappearance. To avoid being arrested, Stéphane flees with his son. A great French crime investigation movie that’s properly old-school. Someone might be angry that the camera wasn’t as static as we’re used to, but on the other hand, it was able to portray the claustrophobic atmosphere and carry it over to my living room. The French have managed to shoot an interesting story in a great and completely unaffected way. I almost have to say that I wasn’t expecting it at all. But I loved the movie all the more.

R.I.F. could possibly function as a closed episode of an extensive crime cycle, but even that would not entice anyone. The film is undermined by an unimaginative script and average television production values with unremarkable actors. Overall impression: 45%.
