Luke (Gosling) on määränpäätön uskalikko, joka kulkee kaupungista toiseen tekemässä stunt-performansseja moottoripyörällään. Matkalla hän kohtaa menneisyytensä Rominan (Mendes) ja saa tietää tulleensa isäksi sillä aikaa, kun on keskittynyt maailman karnevaaleihin. Hän päättää ryhtyä vastuulliseksi perheen pääksi, hylätä elon tien päällä ja tienata elantonsa arkisesti automekaanikkona. Huoltamon Robin (Mendelsohn) keksii kuin keksiikin käyttöä stunt-taitoiselle Lukelle ilmiömäisenä sarjapankkiryöstäjänä. Ei aikaakaan, kun lainvalvoja Avery Crossin (Cooper) koura tavoittaa sankarin. Kunnianhimoinen keltanokka Avery harhailee vaarallisen korruptoituneen etsivä Delucan (Liotta) ikeen alla, etsien tasapainoa työn, vaimonsa ja poikansa välillä. Lopulta kahden perheenpuolustajan, Averyn ja Luken, yhteenotto säteilee myös kummankin jälkikasvun harteille, eikä pojille (Dane DeHaan ja Emory Cohen) jää muuta vaihtoehtoa, kuin katsoa silmiin kohtalokasta, mutta yhteistä isiensä perintöä.
