Cassandra Claren suositun nuortenromaanisarjan ensimmäisen osan filmatisoinnissa tavallinen tenityttö Clary törmää salaperäisiin Varjometsästäjiin, jotka johdattavat hänet demonien, vampyyrien ja haltijoiden maailmaan.
Kun Clary Fray lähtee New Yorkin Pandemonium-yökerhoon, hän ei todellakaan odota joutuvansa todistamaan nuoren pojan murhaa – varsinkaan murhaa, jonka tekee kolme outoihin tatuointeihin verhottua ja merkillisiä aseita käyttävää nuorta. Lisäksi ruumiskin katoaa vielä jäljettömiin. Tapauksesta on hankala ilmoittaa poliisille, kun kukaan muu ei ole nähnyt tappajia eikä jäljellä ole mitään – ei edes veritahraa – jolla voisi todistaa pojan kuolleen. Vai oliko uhrina poika?
Näin Clary tulee ensi kerran kohdanneeksi Varjometsästäjät – soturit, jotka ovat ottaneet tehtäväkseen kitkeä demonit maan päältä. Hän tapaa ensi kerran myös Varjometsästäjiin kuuluvan Jacen, joka näyttää päällepäin enkeliltä mutta jolla on varsin pirullinen luonto. Vuorokauden kuluessa Clary kuitenkin tempautuu mukaan Jacen ja Varjometsästäjien maailmaan kostoretkelle, kun hänen oma äitinsä katoaa ja demoni hyökkää vielä Claryn itsensäkin kimppuun. Mutta miksi demonit olisivat kiinnostuneita Claryn ja tämän äidin kaltaisista tavallisista kuolevaisista? Ja miten Clary on yhtäkkiä saanut näkemisen kyvyn? Sen Varjometsästäjätkin haluaisivat tietää...

For how exemplary Lily Collins is as Clary, there's so much disappointment on the whole that it's downright tragic. Jamie Bower is clearly desperately bored in Jace's shoes, the creators forgot to tell the wild Jonathan Rhys Meyers that this was not just another episode of The Tudors, and my favorite Isabelle has turned into a snappy dominatrix. Jessica Postigo may have dutifully read the saga, but she wants to incorporate practically every supporting character with all their motivations into the script, even though in this format it would take up half the running time to explain the entire mythology. Luke and Hodge then merely fill the role of forgettable sidekicks instead of making a proper impact on the plot from time to time. The creators ultimately did not even get the chance to return to the Institute, so no further damage was done. I have a great fondness for the saga of the nephilim world in book form, at least as far as the original trilogy is concerned, so I don't want to delve too deep into this rating on principle, but considering how the outcome could have been, a 50% rating is quite a sad limit.

I have to say that the first hour quite entertained me and got me excited about what was going to happen. But then suddenly something went wrong, as if a different director took over the film, and the story became incredibly predictable, the characters acted foolishly and illogically, several important things were not addressed here, which does suggest a sequel, which apparently awaits us despite not very high box office returns. However, I'm not even looking forward to it that much, because at least in terms of filmmaking, it's an overly cluttered atrocity that could be defined as "Harry Potter meets imitators of Gaiman and they agree that 'Twilight' and 'Star Wars' are terribly cool".
