The Great Gatsby – Kultahattu -tarinan keskiössä on kirjailija Fitzgeraldin itsensä oloinen aloitteleva kirjailija Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), joka saapuu keskilännestä New Yorkiin keväällä 1922 ja tutustuu kaupunkiin, jonka moraalin kieltolaki on höllentynyt, jossa jazz soi ja naisten korut kimmeltävät kilpaa kattokruunujen kanssa.
Jahdatessaan omaa amerikkalaista unelmaansa Nick tutustuu naapuriinsa, salaperäiseen miljonääri Jay Gatsbyyn (Leonardo DiCaprio), joka järjestää huvilallaan hulppeita juhlia ja joiden isännästä liikkuu toinen toistaan uskomattomampia huhuja. Samaan seurapiiriin kuuluvat myös Nickin serkku Daisy (Carey Mulligan) ja tämän siniverinen aviomies Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton).
Nick pääsee seuraamaan lähietäisyydeltä super-rikkaiden naapuriensa kiehtovaa maailmaa; heidän unelmiaan, juoniaan ja petoksiaan. Näistä hän kirjoittaa tarinan, jossa mahdoton rakkaus, vilpittömät unelmat ja väistämätön tragedia kohtaavat uskomattomalla tavalla.
