Lára, a mother of two, is gifted with a sixth sense. Not only does she communicate with people in Summerland (the sweet hereafter) in open trans-sceance sessions, but she also has good connection with elves. In her garden she and her husband, Oscar, have a big elf stone, which Lara attends to every day. Oscar runs the family business of elf tourism and spiritual sessions. Iceland – a world of magic, elves and dwarves. And also, of people who naturally believe in all that and take it as a part of their culture, which in itself is pretty magical and strange. And this movie is based on all that. It’s based on the principles and rules of the country. And it’s based on what happens when somebody breaks such rules. Or rather when somebody starts to destroy and demolish such cultures with industry, construction and all kinds of bullshit. Because not even Iceland, a country so naturally beautiful, cannot avoid people who want to make money off nature, so what happened for instance was that they built a hydroelectric power plant, flooded the valley and destroyed the landscape. Only for multinational corporations to get rich off that. And it’s pretty similar in this movie, but with an ending similar to something you’d see in a Brothers Grimm fairy-tale. For me, it was a very pleasant surprise and another movie from Iceland that I will be happy to look back on.
