This film is set in the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains, where country preacher Lundigan and his city wife, Hayward, settle down in a small community. A neighbor, Barbara Bates, is stricken with fever and, in her delirium, calls for her wild but loving beau, Calhoun. Against the wishes of the girl's father, Calhoun shows up and is nearly the recipient of an angry fist. Lundigan keeps the peace by taking some children on a picnic. When Knox, the town atheist, finds that his children were taken along, he goes after the preacher. Lundigan's faith is temporarily shaken when Knox drowns in a nearby lake. Later an epidemic strikes and, by preaching the word of the Lord, Lundigan gives the townsfolk the strength to survive. After three years in the community, Lundigan and Hayward pack up and head for another town. This sentimental piece of Americana is very enjoyable. The tempestuous Hayward liked director King, who treated her with kid gloves and was to become her favorite helmsman, but she resented being costarred with Lundigan, a B-film leading man. While on location outside of Dawsonville, Georgia, Hayward got absorbed in taking some snapshots of the breathtaking scenery of Amicolola Falls. She was backing up while taking the photographs and didn't notice that she was about to step into space and fall into a 729-foot gorge. Studio chauffeur Will Gray spotted her and, in seconds, darted to her side to catch her at the last second before the actress plummeted to certain death. Fox promoted this film into a big hit, particularly in the South; Georgia governor Herman Talmadge was given an engraved copy of the script and this led to the state senate voting Hayward "an adopted daughter of Georgia."
