Set a few months after the end of Season 1, the Boardwalk Empire II. take place in 1921, after Nucky and his lieutenants – including young WWI veteran Jimmy Darmody, whom Nucky helped raise – appeared to solidify their power by successfully rigging an election and getting a Nucky crony elected as Mayor. However, after a bloody KKK attack at Chalky White's bootleg warehouse, Nucky finds his hold on Atlantic City weakened, first by federal agents who arrest him for election fraud and ransack his office, then by members of his own inner circle and even his family, who align themselves with Jimmy's father, the aging Commodore Louis Kaestner, in an attempt to oust Nucky altogether. All the while, mobsters like Arnold Rothstein, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Al Capone wait in the wings, looking for the right opportunity to grab a bigger piece of Nucky's pie. (HBO Europe)

I was very pleased with the second season. There was more action than in the first one and it got off to a flying start. The individual characters went through interesting development and the plot managed to surprise me several times, so I was far from bored. Steve Buscemi and Michael Shannon played their roles in grand style, and I can only look forward to season three and hope that it will keep up the high standard.
