The number “three”, together with “direct-to-video” suggest misfortune, but the third Grudge is a surprisingly decent ghost story overall. It doesn’t forgo the characteristic atmosphere of its two American predecessors, thanks to which The Grudge is a series that has more or less (rather less, but still) managed to scare me with every entry. The story this time couldn’t be any simpler, but I don’t see it as a bad thing. The lower budget is visible at times in the not very good looking ghosts, but in the end it’s not as bad as in the trailer. After two films, Toby Wilkins is looking like an interesting talent whose future work might be worth following.
