Vuonna 1937 Japanin puolustusvoimat hyökkäävät Kiinan silloiseen pääkaupunkiin Nanjingiin ja syyllistyvät kiinalaisten joukkomurhaan yrittäessään sisällyttää alueen Japanin keisarikuntaan. John Rabe (Ulrich Tukur), saksalainen natsipuolueen jäsen, päätyy asumaan johtamaansa tehtaaseen, joka sijaitsee Nanjingin suoja-alueella. Aluksi hän yrittää pelastaa kiinalaisia työntekijöitään diplomaattisin keinoin, mutta huomaa sen olevan liian hidas keino sodan kurimuksessa. Pian hän joutuu tekemään radikaaleja päätöksiä suojellakseen sekä työntekijöitään, että tehtaan alueella piilossa olevia kiinalaisia sotilaitakin. (Future film)
