Venice, 1763. When writer and libertine Lorenzo Da Ponte is exiled to Vienna, he is introduced to the Kings favourite composer, Salieri, and a newcomer named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Seeing an opportunity to undermine his rival`s ascension, Salieri tricks Mozart into hiring the unknown Da Ponte as his librettist. A wonderful film about the librettist of Mozart's "Don Giovanni," Lorenzo da Ponte. It’s one of the lesser-known gems from the filmography of Tobias Moretti, who seems to be afraid of absolutely nothing. This time he played an excellent Casanova. While a film about da Ponte's later years in America would be just as interesting, this is an absolute classic - the expulsion from Venice, the perfect music, the proud singers, and the vice and love. It has everything it needs.
