Fool's Gold - kultaakin kalliimpaa

A pleasantly nautical adventure film. I think it fulfilled its purpose to entertain, to amuse. Although Kate Hudson's allusions to the great sex with Finn get tiresome over time. Some of the jokes are on the boundary between funny and awkward. But I still like the way Tess passes out plates and beats Finn. 3.5 stars. (28.10.2010)

A summer cinema somewhere near the sea, comfortable seating, good food by your side and a exotic drink in hand, and maybe then you can fully enjoy Fool's Gold. In a relatively cool temperate zone, howerver, this endeavor is truly uninteresting and clichéd. Andy Tennant captivates the audience with his direction only twice or thrice throughout the whole film. There are a few successful jokes here and there, but the whole thing looks incredibly clichéd and worn out. Even help the fact that Matthew McConaughey has a bigger chest than Kate Hudson can’t save it. It's not completely stupid and if you expects lower middle class entertainment, you’ll get exactly that. Why didn't the rest of the film just retain the briskness, inventiveness and wit of the beginning? I have nothing against the first half-hour, which starts with a perfect boat-sinking scene ("Where's the boat?" - "I found it." - "Where is it?" - "You'll figure it out.") and continues with an equally funny episode with a chain and anchor, and breaking into Donald Sutherland's boat and meeting his naive daughter. The mistake is in the rest of the Fool's Gold. Yes, in the rest that unfortunately contains that expected treasure hunt. A boring treasure hunt, it must be said. I almost didn't care about the ending with the skirmish in the cemetery and the final confrontation between somebody and somebody. Despite all that, though, this is a more or less harmless and painless film for one viewing. So I rate it the same as Sahara = two and a half.__P.S. Very pleasant music by George Fenton. Matthew McConaughey is a pretty cool guy, and even though directors often rely on his sex appeal in movies, I think he's a great comedic actor. This is evident in the movie "Fool's Gold", where his co-star once again is Kate Hudson, which is not really a win for me personally, because Kate is one of the actresses that I find very hard to tolerate. "Fool's Gold" is mainly a movie that doesn't rely on her acting abilities, but rather on the fact that she looks absolutely perfect in a bikini, if you happen to like petite women who don't have much else interesting about them. What is it actually about? What else but treasure. Finn (Matthew McConaughey) is a treasure hunter who doesn't have much luck. He has been searching for a lost treasure for a long time, but he can't find it. When it finally seems like luck is on his side, he runs into problems elsewhere. He doesn't have a boat and in the end, he even loses his wife Tess (Kate Hudson), who divorces him because he is basically a nobody who can only scuba dive. I won't go into detail about the great happy ending the film has, I would rather mention what else is wrong here. There are quite a few caricature-like characters in the film who are not funny, maybe only Donald Sutherland is pleasantly foolish, which is also reflected in his film daughter, who is a wonderfully useless character. There are more of them in the end, but we have to accept that when searching for treasure, there must be someone who follows you, because there are always at least two people searching for treasure. "Fool's Gold" is once again a too long film that doesn't offer much. You definitely won't be falling over laughing, just like you won't be rooting for the main couple to get together, rather you will suffer with a silent hope and wish that one of them would die. Well, just imagine the ending yourself. And if you have any marital problems, go on a treasure hunt, where everything will be resolved.
